Feng shui (traditional Chinese: 風水; simplified Chinese: 风水; pinyin: fēng shuǐ; pronounced /ˈfəŋˌʃueɪ/ foong-shoy in Chinese Mandarin, "fheng-schway" in American English) is an ancient Chinese system of aesthetics believed to utilize the Laws of both heaven (astronomy) and Earth (geography) to help one improve life by receiving positive Qi. The original designation for the discipline is Kan Yu (traditional Chinese: 堪輿; simplified Chinese: 堪舆; pinyin: kānyú; literally: Tao of heaven and earth).

The words feng shui literally translate as "wind-water" in English. This is a cultural shorthand taken from the following passage of the Zhangshu (Book of Burial) by Guo Pu of the Jin Dynasty:

Qi rides the wind and scatters, but is retained when encountering water.

Traditional Feng Shui practice always requires an extremely accurate Chinese compass, or Luo Pan, in order to determine the directions in finding any auspicious sector in a desired location.

Feng Shui 101 For Beginners

The ancient art has many elements that are interesting to learn if you are interested. Many aspects can determine what type of person you are. The different elements to remember are:

1. Water- Promoting development and energy, water plays a crucial role in the 5 elements. Having a fountain is a way of promoting wealth, but too many times flushing your toilet or running your sink is symbolic of wasting wealth.

2. Wood- This element in the decorating art form promotes motivation and passion in your home. Having plants in your home is a good way of welcoming the motivating power of wood and help you focus on the tasks at hand.

3. Fire- Similar to wood in the representation of passion, fire is the most powerful element in the ancient art. With the incorporation of fire in your decoration, you can bring that spark back into a rough relationship and have more passion in places where it counts.

4. Metal- This part of the feng shui puzzle will help you promote attention. Is it needed to have attention brought to your home? Having attention brought into your home will make up for the many times which you cannot get anything done because of the lack of attention.

5. Earth- This is one of the most stable of elements in the cycle. Having a firm foundation in everything you do will get you to get things done. When you have that steadiness, you can better appreciate the need for the elements.

With the different elements, you can better organize you place of business, home or help out a friend. Feng Shui is very important if you are to find balance in your life.

This ying and yang feng is another way to help with relaxing you and bringing that inner calm in your life that we all need. When you have that inner peace within yourself, you feel like a better person.
