Feng shui (traditional Chinese: 風水; simplified Chinese: 风水; pinyin: fēng shuǐ; pronounced /ˈfəŋˌʃueɪ/ foong-shoy in Chinese Mandarin, "fheng-schway" in American English) is an ancient Chinese system of aesthetics believed to utilize the Laws of both heaven (astronomy) and Earth (geography) to help one improve life by receiving positive Qi. The original designation for the discipline is Kan Yu (traditional Chinese: 堪輿; simplified Chinese: 堪舆; pinyin: kānyú; literally: Tao of heaven and earth).

The words feng shui literally translate as "wind-water" in English. This is a cultural shorthand taken from the following passage of the Zhangshu (Book of Burial) by Guo Pu of the Jin Dynasty:

Qi rides the wind and scatters, but is retained when encountering water.

Traditional Feng Shui practice always requires an extremely accurate Chinese compass, or Luo Pan, in order to determine the directions in finding any auspicious sector in a desired location.

Feng Shui - The Balance of Ying and Yang

Feng Shui. Yin and Yang. You may well heard of the two all the time and yet not put together - well at least not completely and fully. How does it all work? These Ying and Yang concepts along with and together with the concepts and practice of Feng Shui?

"Yin" can be said to be the "Way of the Earth" itself. Just like the earth and nature's cycles Ying contracts and condenses, in an almost endless cycle and twist. Yin represents the passive principle and principles as found in nature itself exhibited and detailed by darkness, cold and wetness. On a human level it can be said that Yin symbolizes femininity and inertia. Yet it may seem, on the surface, that Yin's dark qualities can be said to somehow express a darker viewpoint as well as viewpoints of the Chinese views of women themselves. This is simply not so and should be emphasized in a most emphatic manner/ Even though Yin's associated traits may not appear desirable they are not directed at any one person or even group and grouping. In its simplicity Yen is most desirable and wanted. Yin is the essence of quietness, in-wardness and retrospection. In previous traditional Chinese cultures women generally stayed at home and inside their dwelling and dwelling spaces.

On the other side of the fence, or of the tracks, Yang can be seen as the masculine side of the equation. While on a human level Yang is often expressed and exhibited as masculinity as well as the most positive side of emotions. Yang is often referred to as both the ways and means to heaven. Yang can be said to represent the land of the living whereas Yin may represent the land of the deceased and departed. Yang also contains an aspect of its counterpart giving credence and credibility to the phrase "What goes up must go down " and "What comes around goes around" and finally "Sun up , Sun down".

The point of this all - is the question of balance and balance in our lives. If we lack balance our lives will be in the fruitless. How many people get to the end of their lives only to realize either that all this consumerism and one up-manship of goods and possessions that they were perusing means very little at all. On the other hand one may realize that all their devotion at work, at the behest of angry and demanding bosses resulted in a lifestyle that left little time and energy for their families and their true dreams. In essence they were busy at work building their someone else's dreams rather than their own.

Feng Shui is all about balance - whether at home furnishings, their arrangement and decoration and also most importantly in our own lives. The talji symbol illustrates and demonstrates the eternal interaction between the two forces of Ying and Yang. Eternally and constantly just like flipping two sides of a coin - Ying and Yang are in a constant struggle indeed battle. Yet Yin and Yang are interwoven. They can never be separated just as the two sides of a coin can not be split or removed. One side of the coin is no better than the other side - they are just two different sides of the object that indeed compliment each other.

So is it with Yin and Yang and the personal challenges and struggle in our lives. Our lives must be in balance just like the Ying and Yang forces of our own Feng Shui. Feng Shui!

Creating Abundance Using Feng Shui

In these challenging economic times the word "Abundance" seems obscure. Why is that? Is it because we only associate abundance with money? Webster defines "Abundance" as "fullness to overflowing, a great or plentiful amount." So what does abundance mean to you? Once you define "Abundance" in your own terms, then the door is open to creating it in your life. How do you go about creating this? The first step to attracting abundance in your life is to check in with your "self-talk." In other words, what is the "mind chatter" exactly saying? The power behind our thoughts and words is the defining point between attracting and repelling experiences in our life. For example, if you honor your worth and time, give and receive freely, and open your heart, you will begin to attract all that is good and abundant into your life. On the other hand, not honoring your worth and time, not being open to receiving and giving, and closing your heart is the exact countermeasure or repelling thought process to creating abundance in your life.

From a Feng Shui perspective, abundance can be represented by any one of the Guas in the ba-gua template. Again, we revisit the question... What does Abundance mean to you? If your answer is Wealth, then several "Power Points" can be evaluated within the structure. The most simplistic approach is to evaluate the Wealth (Southeast) and Near Wealth (Northwest) portents. These two areas act as polarities to one another and should be balanced with the appropriate elements and symbols of prosperity. The Southeast area of the outer landscape should present with year round vegetation, be well maintained and have activating qi components such as a bird feeder, bird bath or wooden chime. Enticing qi in the Southeast area of the yard activates abundance on a social level. Internally, the Southeast portent should exude a bright, lively feel with plenty of wood and water elements by way of healthy and vibrant plants, to a fountain of flowing water, and any symbol that represents abundance to you. The polarity or Near Wealth portent (Northwest) should house plenty of earth and metal elements. This is an area of networking and mentorship. There is always a person or group of people who provide guidance and assistance for us in life. No one ever achieves success on their own.

On a deeper level of feng shui we can begin to examine additional points of prosperous energy within the structure. Assessing the Na jia Method (advance 24 portents) can locate up to four additional sheng qi points (generating breath for good fortune/prosperity) within a structure. By incorporating the proper element (supportive) one can open up and influence fortuitous energy within a space. This technique bodes exceptionally well when the birth date of the structure is unavailable. This method supersedes the Bazhai method which is only capable of finding one sheng qi point.

When the birth date of the structure is available, then Flying Star method should be employed. In this advance method time and space are taken into account. Locating the present water star (8) within the structure and supporting it with the proper forms (activity, windows, doorways) especially moving water, will effectively propagate wealth. Secondary wealth points in this method are also available and by enhancing all of these power spots one can dramatically improve "Abundance" from a wealth initiative. Taking into account the obvious like clearing clutter and repairing anything that is broken or that no longer serves a purpose in your life, are also important factors to consider.

On a subtle level, paying attention to how you handle your money on a daily basis is also a contributing factor in attracting wealth-abundance into your life. Respecting your money by placing it neatly in your wallet, paying your bills on time, and keeping your financial records organized says you care. If you choose to neglect your money, then you are in fact telling the Universe to let money neglect you.
Abundance can take on many meanings besides financial wealth. Should your directive be family, love, laughter of good friends, or experiencing your soul's mission in life, then your "self-talk" should reflect that. Connecting to your space by way of proper symbols and elements in the East, Southwest, Northwest and South respectively awakens these areas of abundance within your space directly impacting your behavior and ultimately you attracting this type of abundance into your life.

The most profound way to experience abundance is to live generously and allow it to flow through your life and not just into your life. When we give we make room for even greater abundance to flow into our life. Showing gratitude on a daily basis for the abundance we do have in our life will effectively magnify this energy and more good things will come your way, including finances. Essentially, the more we are able to experience the prosperity that is already present in our lives, the more readily material blessings will show up.

Feng Shui Your Life For a Happy Year

Whether you're ready or not a new year has arrived. With all it's promise and hope, we have begun a new calendar year.

This is the perfect time to clear the clutter from your home and your life to make sure that 2009 flows the way you want it to.

Living in one place for a long time we tend to gather lots of things that eventually get stuck in drawers and the back of closets, taking up space and filling our homes with "clutter energy".

Clutter Energy is that feeling of unease that seems to be saying, "do something, anything, just DO Something"!

Starting off the new year by clearing out this energy opens the door for a more positive flow of feelings, thoughts and new things to move in.

Start of by committing to release at least 50 things in a 24 hour period.

I know that sounds like a lot, but once you get going you'll discover that it's quick and easy.

Get two boxes or garbage bags, fill one with items that you can donate if you like and the other is just trash.

Start in the "junk drawer" in the kitchen. How much stuff have you crammed there thinking you would eventually use it and never have? Release it and enjoy the feeling that comes with letting go.

Move on to other drawers in the kitchen. Release old butter tubs that you just have too many of.

Got more coffee cups than the cabinets can hold? Let these go as well.

Go through the rest of the house letting go of magazines, stashes of papers and the like.

Next get into your room. Do you have clothes that don't fit, you don't like and haven't worn in over a year? Let em go.

Dig through the closet and the drawers. All socks with holes go into the bag. Undies that ride or scratch, into the bag.

Let go of shoes too. We tend to hold onto things because, "I paid good money for those", or "someone gave these to me".

Let yourself breathe.

As you do the clearing out of physical things from your space be aware of thoughts and habits that you have that don't serve you as well. Are you still holding onto grudges and old hurts and insults? Let these go as you move through the house releasing stuff.

When you have your fifty items in 24 hours and are still on a roll, commit to another fifty. Take on the garage, holiday decorations, etc. Move through the yard and release anything that's just taking up space and not giving you that feel good feeling it did when you first placed it there.

By doing this exercise you are not only creating a better look and feel to your home, you are opening your life to release old emotions, pain and stinking thinking.

When you combine the physical exercise of clearing out stuff with the spiritual aspect of clearing out thinking and feelings, you will restore balance and harmony in your life.

By instilling this process into your thinking for the new year, you will be less likely to hold onto excess stuff and hurtful feelings, letting go much easier and cluttering up your energy much less.

Happy New Year.. create each day with joy!

10 Feng Shui Tips For Having the Best Year Yet - Chinese New Year is Here January 26

January 26th marks the Chinese New Year -- which will be the year of the Ox. Those who follow Feng Shui are already probably preparing their homes and businesses for the upcoming New Year. So what do the rest of us do? Don't we want a really good new year? Of course we do!

Let me show you some tricks and tips that have been used for centuries and really help ensure a good year filled with health, luck, happiness and prosperity. They are easy to do and handle and take less time that you would initially think.

For starters, if you are interested in Feng Shui, I have written countless articles and even have a Feng Shui Shop where you can purchase love cures and all sorts of items to help balance your home. But one of the biggest tricks in encouraging only good to come into your life and to have your life go as it should, would be in how you handle clutter into your home. Is it really that simple? Yes, a resounding big YES!

For girls or guys, clutter seems to be the root of all evil. I myself must constantly be on board in watching how clutter simply accumulates into my household. I don't even know how it gets there at times. But how does one even approach clutter and frankly what is clutter anyway? And why does it effect and how can it effect the good (or lack of goodness) that comes into your life. These questions I will answer now for you.

Clutter can be compared to weeds in the garden, and as my Mother would often say, 'weeds are plants in the wrong place'. Clutter can be items that no longer serve you any good, such as 'old magazines, broken items, art work you don't like since it was given to you by your least favorite Aunt, clothes that do not fit you anymore and yet have been hanging in your closet for over 5 years, books you haven't touched or read in two or more years, etc.

You get the idea. Clutter is not just unwanted junk mail and misplaced items, but is all those items that no longer serve you. In turn, keeping these items in your home suppresses all areas of your life; it can be scary to even think about.

Clutter truly suppresses your energy that most people start to not even think about the clutter in their homes, and often wonder why they can't find a job or a new wonderful love in their life - or even questioning why they fight with their family so much.

Clutter should be handled quickly - and frankly the more you pay attention to de-cluttering, the easier it gets, really! Keeping these un-loved items in your home actually keeps you 'down' in not providing you the opportunities you may wish in your life to be in abundance. There is a huge connection here that most people miss.

When your home is only filled with items that are truly loved, you find beautiful and are extremely of good use to you, you are creating a home that supports the good in you and the good in others to share with you.

I am not at all talking or even suggesting you have your household so organized that it becomes sterile, in fact, just the opposite. A home should feel loved and lived in, should have a few live plants here and there and should be a place of comforted serenity for you.

I know firsthand how great the energy feels in my home since I did a major re-organizing of my art studio room recently. I have enjoyed being able to walk around in this room and even see the supplies I have and can now have easy access to.

People when they enter my home, always mention the energy in my home. They feel comfortable, warm and loved. I may take a little pride in this, but it is such a lovely thing to hear other people say about my home. And in turn, I am calm, at peace with myself and the choices I make in my life on a daily basis. And I tell you, I do not have a fancy decorated home filled with expensive furniture, in fact just the opposite. My place has a few battered antiques, some pieces from Ikea and several rooms have to serve more than one purpose. (Living in NY, you know that space is at a minimum.)

And speaking up of space, have you ever actually factored how much space is being taken up by your clutter and that you are paying a good portion of your mortgage or rent on this cluttered space which could be of actual use to you and your family?

Today I will be tackling moving around the furniture my living room that also serves as a music room so I can refresh the chi and energy in this main room of my home, but here are some tips to help ensure you have a great New Year utilizing Feng Shui approach. If you are smart, do what I did, and do a little each day. By the time the Chinese New Year rolls around, you will have prepared your home for the New Year.

The following tips and tasks should all be done before the Chinese New Year which falls on January 26th this year 2009 and are usually followed by people who believe and practice Feng Shui and prepare for the New Year.

  1. Most who seriously follow Feng Shui and wish for a good Chinese New Year will clean their home from top to bottom. Seriously clean from top to bottom. This includes washing down their walls, baseboards, moving out their furniture from the walls to completely clean behind.
  2. Clean all crystals with sea salt and have them soak in the sun in a window to clean their energies.
  3. Replace any sea salt cures they may have placed around their house with new small bags filled with fresh sea salt. (The sea salt helps protect against negative energies and helps soak up negative vibrations)
  4. Move around the furniture in their home. If a complete change around is impossible, even moving the hutch for example just a few inches to clean behind it, is enough to help move any stagnant Qi (chi = energy) out of its way and to refresh the overall energy.
  5. As garbage collects while de-cluttering your home, remove it from your household immediately - don't let it sit in the hallway, "saying to yourself - oh, I will get to it tomorrow" - This is negative energy you are keeping in your home - out it goes!
  6. Open windows - and even turn on a fan, should you have windows only on one side of your apartment for example, to literally move the air around.
  7. Turn on all your lights, even if for 5 minutes when the windows are opened while you are cleaning to help bring in good happiness and high energy Qi (chi).
  8. Give any plants in your home, a fresh 'shower' of water - throw them in your shower, or spritz them with fresh water to remove any dust that may have collected on their leaves.
  9. Take a look at my other articles in following Feng Shui tips such as keeping a bowl of fresh fruit on your dining room table to encourage fresh food being constant in your home.
  10. Clean out your refrigerator of any and all bad food. This should be done weekly in fact, but it is very auspicious to have it completely cleaned before the New Year.

Tricks to getting this done:

  1. Start out small, and don't be discouraged. Put on your favorite music as you go around your home to clean and de-clutter.
  2. Start in 10 minute increments - use a timer if you have to. Gather any old newspapers, old junk mail, etc. old magazines and remove from your premises. - Keeping 'old' information in your home inhibits new information and new energized Qi to enter your home.
  3. Try with just clearing your desk. When was the last time you saw any desk surface? Don't answer that! - Instead, just get going with garbage back in hand and start removing any junk.
  4. Touch any item just once, pick it up and make a decision. If you are to keep it, then go and put it where it should go - if it is to be tossed or donated, then off it goes into those appropriate boxes or bags.
  5. Encourage family members to de-clutter by being the example of organizing your areas and space in the home. I would highly suggest not removing other people's clutter without their permission or assistance.
  6. Create a system and stick with it in regards to how you handle your paper that comes into your home. Mail should be in one place only - not spread over several areas. Junk mail in my place never is allowed past my front door. I have a small trash bag that is emptied four times a week. I tend to open my mail by the front door, then place all extra envelopes, junk mail, flyers, etc. right into the trash bag I have set up. Then only the necessary mail is welcomed to come into my home and to a small basket in my office.
  7. Stay focused - it can be very easy to bebop from one place to another and seemingly get nothing accomplished when you start to de-clutter. Instead, just concentrate on your desk top. Continue until it is clean and clutter free. You might just realize that you now are encouraged to tackle your kitchen counter tops.

Immediate Results You Will See and Feel:

1. If you simply just de-cluttered your desk top, you will have an immediate sense of accomplishment. This is why I suggest you start small.

2. Your energy will be heightened - even after working only 10 minutes, since seeing your accomplishments; you may just hit that timer for another 10 minutes to attack other table surfaces.

3. Reclaimed space is a blessing and can make everyone happy that lives in the home.

4. Removing said un-loved, broken, not used, and garbage from your home quite literally removes those issues within your life that are un-loved, broken, not used and 'garbaged'. Imagine that!

5. Be warned, that certain emotional issues you may not been facing may come to the surface - which is what un-expectantly happened to me once I started attacking my art room where I do my creative work. I was shocked for 15 minutes until I realized what was actually happening to me.

This art room falls in the relationship/love/marriage bagua section in my home (more on baguas in another article - or do a Google search, you will come up with plenty of information). And since this room was a mess, so was my love relationship - once I started to de-clutter it, all my emotions regarding a current relationship came to the surface out of seemingly nowhere! After 15 minutes, I realized my own negative, angry thoughts were reflecting those I had suppressed as a result and with the mess in my art room, I was able to re-center myself, become balanced once again, and have loving thoughts.

6. Rome was not built in a day, so accomplishing a full de-clutter may take a few weeks, but with a little being done over the course of a few days and even just a few hours, you will noticed a 'lighter' feel to your home and space.

7. You will gain a sense of accomplishment, gain valuable space you have been paying for but not using, gain self-esteem back that may have been lacking, be able to love and give more.

The real objective here is to have a wonderful home which in turns supports the way of life you wish to live. You will want any objects in your home to be loved, to be in perfect working order, not chipped in any way, and to give you 'good' energy when looking and/or using it. It is that simple. There are many other little tricks you can employ in your home to help enhance your good luck in all areas of your life.

When you have a home that supports the way you wish to live, wonderful things start happening in your life. I can attest to that. I had an art/office room just two weeks ago, that I really 'let go' - that one could barely walk into the room. How the heck was I able to even do any art or get organized with my business if I couldn't even walk into that room? Even looking into the room got me so down - so much so, I let it slide week after week.

I am sure to tell you, that even looking at the room became depressing and is one of the actual reasons for why it took me so long to actually start the project. But within a short period of three hours, I was able to transform the room. I must have gotten rid of at least 5 bags of stuff - and donated another 6 boxes worth of items that now can be loved and used by someone else.

And at that point, I got addicted to removing any items in my entire household that no longer served me. I was able to 'give away' using freecycle.org: cookbooks, art supplies, real estate books, clothes, CDs, and so much more. In turn, I now have space on my book shelves for new things to come into my life, new things like ideas, new books that can be utilized by me and new good people have room to come into my home and into my life.

One last trick I recently read that really aided me in my goals in de-cluttering my household was to ask myself, "If I had to move tomorrow, how many bags of garbage would I have to throw out?" By answering that question with an answer that reads more than one bag of garbage, it helps me go right to those areas in my home that might need to be cleaned out.

Well what else can I say? But, Good Luck! And let me know if you tried any of these rituals and their workings on your life and career. And certainly share with me your success stories!

Feng Shui 2009 Part 1 - Predictions

The year of Ji Chou (Earth Ox) begins on 4th February 2009 and ends on 4th February 2010. The #9 purple star occupies the central position this year. I have used two factors to predict the events of 2009 - the elements in the year of Ji Chou (Earth Ox) and the central star #9 purple star.

Animal birth signs
People born in the chou (ox) year i.e. 4th February 1937 - 4th February 1938, 4th February 1949 - 4th February 1950, 4th February 1961 - 4th February 1962, 4th February 1973 - 4th February 1974, 4th February 1985 - 4th February 1986, 4th February 1997 - 4th February 1998, 4th February 2009 - 4th February 2010 should be careful regarding their decisions and generally lay low this year. This year you will find it difficult to progress and there may be many changes in your life.

If you are born in wei (Goat) year - 4th February 1943 - 4th February 1944, 4th February 1955 - 4th February 1956, 4th February 1967 - 4th February 1968, 4th February 1979 - 4th February 1980, 4th February 1991 - 4th February 1992, 4th February 2003 - 4th February 2004 this year will be a difficult year for you, progress will be slow. Avoid unnecessary confrontations and disputes as you stand to loose more than gain anything. There will be many changes in your life.

If you are born in wei (goat) month (6th July - 7th August) then this year you will run into relationship hassles with your parents. In severe cases you may have a fall out with your parents. In office you could have problems with your superiors or immediate boss.

Other animal signs that need to be careful this year is xu (dog), people born in 4th February 1946 - 4th February 1947, 4th February 1958 - 4th February 1959, 4th February 1970 - 4th February 1971, 4th February 1982 - 4th February 1983, 4th February 1994 - 4th February 1995, and 4th February 2006 - 4th February 2007. You need to be weary of hidden dangers and health issues. Chances are high that you may get into unnecessary fights or arguments with your colleagues, friends or family members. This will be an emotionally turbulent year for you.

If you are born in wu (horse) hour - 11am - 1pm, wei (goat) hour - 1pm - 3pm, xu (dog) hour - 7pm - 9pm, you will face obstacles in your academic pursuits or will not perform up to the mark in your examinations. You will face problems related to career advancement. You will face relationship issues with your children.

If you are born in zi (11pm - 1am), chou (1am - 3am), you (5pm - 7pm), si (9am - 11am) you should do well in your academic pursuits and examinations. You will find it easy to grow career wise.

Please note that the year of birth just represents 25% of the information of your natal chart, for an accurate analysis a complete bazi assessment of your natal chart is required.

Year 2009
The year of Ji Chou (Earth Ox) has earth element in the heaven stem and earth element in the earth element in the earthly branch, with hidden stems of water and metal element. This kind of earth is frozen earth or earth with snow. The image is that of vast open land with snow or frost. It represents hard work, perseverance, stability, stillness and trustworthiness.

Business scenario

This year in the business scenario there will be growth in the earth industry like construction, realty businesses, land and property dealers/ developers, recruitment or human resource agencies and insurance, competition will be on the rise, financial profits will be less.

Businesses that will generate good income this year are clothing and textile industry, publishing houses, timber and wood industry, schools and universities, education industry, paper industry, wooden furniture industry, book stores and food industry.

Businesses that may suffer a setback or generate little or no profits are telecommunication industry, media and broadcasting, internet related businesses, shipping industry, cruise industry, drinks and beverages industry.

This will be a productive year for business dealing in fuel, petroleum or petroleum based products, oil and gas industry, electronics and electrical appliances, restaurants, power industry etc. There will be new products and reforms made in this sector. The growth will be steady.

Metal related industries like banks, currencies, gold, copper, steel, aluminum, silver, heavy machineries may see little or no profits. Metal industry will suffer a setback.

Health
The five elements represent different parts of a human body; earth represents the abdomen, stomach, muscles and cells, spleen. 2009 is a double earth year which means health issues will be pertaining to stomach, muscles and cells area. People will be more prone to health issues related to this area. On the other hand the #9 purple star represents heart and eyes. People will be prone to heart related disorders and eye problems. To sum it up in 2009 there will be a rise in stomach, muscles, heart, eye and cancer related problems.

People born in chou (ox) year - 1937, 1949, 1961, 1973, 1985, 1997, 2009; wei (goat) year- 1943, 1955, 1967, 1979, 1991, 2003; xu (dog) year 1946, 1958, 1970, 1982, 1994 and 2006 need to be extra careful.

Shares and stock market
The stock market should have a steady growth this year.

Stocks and shares that will perform well are shares related to clothing and textile industry, food and food processing industry, wood and timber industry, bamboo, cane, cotton, publishing industry. Power, fuel, oil and gas related shares and stocks will have a steady growth this year.

Feng Shui 2009 Part II - Your House

The year of Ji Chou (Earth Ox) begins on 4th February 2009 and ends on 4th February 2010. The #9 purple star occupies the central position this year.

AUSPICIOUS AREAS
Northwest
The most auspicious area in your house/office is the northwest area. This year northwest area is being visited by the #1 white star - amongst other things the #1 white star represents intelligence, wisdom, academic achievements, literary achievements, reputation and fame. The #1 white star is related to new beginnings and is regarded as the future prosperous wealth star.

The #1 white star in northwest (qian) palace will bring in luck for those who are in senior management or are holding powerful administrative posts. This area will be beneficial for politicians, financial managers, finance advisors and budget planners. People using this area will have good analyzing ability. This area is suitable for people in military, police and other law enforcement department.

Middle aged men using this area will get good support from their superiors and seniors. They are likely to get a promotion and/or opportunity to join a powerful post.

Utilize this room as often as possible. If this is not possible at least open the windows in this area and make the area active.

Center
The center this year is visited by the #9 purple star. The #9 purple star represents future prosperity star in period 8 (2004 - 2024). The #9 purple star is a fiery star and brings about fast action. The attributes of the #9 purple star are beauty, glamour, brilliance, spirit, anger (hot headedness), aggressiveness, culture and advancement. In the world political arena you will see decisions being made after much heated debates and arguments. In the corporate world middle management people especially ladies in middle management will outshine others and will receive recognition for their work.

There will be a rise in cultural and fashion events. People will be drawn to such events. This year fashion will see new designs and designers. People will become more beauty and fashion conscious.

This year new reforms will be made and put in practice in the financial markets to prevent future meltdowns. Discussions, debates and ideas for financial security and management will be held.

Southeast
This year the southeast (xun) palace is host to the #8 white star. The #8 white star is considered the wealth star for period 8 (2004 - 2024) and is an auspicious star.

The #8 star by nature is yang earth and southeast (xun) palace is yang wood. According to wu xing (five elements) theory the qi in this area is disruptive and not smooth. You can use the southeast area this year, but avoid doing construction, renovations or any form of repair work in this area. Children using this room could be prone to hurting their limbs, rheumatic and arthritis problems. You should place red color objects in the area.

The #8 white star represents wealth, fame and respect. To reap the benefits of the #8 white star you need to keep this area active by using it as often as possible. If this is not possible then at least open the windows in this area and let the good qi flow in.

INAUSPICIOUS AREAS
North
This year the north is afflicted with the #5 yellow star. The #5 yellow star is known as the tragedy or calamity star. The #5 yellow star is inauspicious, malefic and one of the most dreaded star in feng shui. It is not only unusable and untimely, but it brings in disasters, calamities, loss of business, health problems and relationship problems. In the ancient texts it is mentioned that till the time the area that hosts the #5 yellow star is not disturbed the star will not show its malefic nature. Therefore, it is wise to avoid any form of ground - breaking, construction works, renovations and repair works in the north area.
The #5 yellow star is yang earth in nature and north (kan) palace is yang water in nature. In wu xing (five elements) theory earth destroys water. This means the northern side of cities, states, countries and continents will be more prone to natural disasters related to earth and water like floods, earthquakes and storms. There could be issues related to contaminated water, chemicals or medicines.

The #5 yellow star denotes fatalities, you will be prone to difficult to diagnose illnesses. People using this area often could face health problems related to kidneys, ears, genital and urinary bladder. Babies, expecting mother and senior citizens should avoid this area. Besides health problems you will face financial problems, delays and obstacles in conducting your work.

Remedy
This is one star that requires a remedy to keep it calm. Utilize any one of the remedies mentioned below. Remember not to disturb the star by doing construction, ground breaking or repair works in this area.

  • A six rod metal wind chime - when it rings it should make a metallic sound (unlike popular believe it is not the number of rods, but the sound that matters).
  • Salt water cure - in a medium sized glass bowl fill 3/4 salt and fill with water. The size of the bowl depends on the size of the house or the room. You will need to change this mixture every time it gets dry or dirty.
  • Other remedies include a metal wu lou (calabash). Six Chinese coins and round or circular brass or copper artifacts.

West
The west this year is afflicted with the #2 black star. This star is untimely, inauspicious and malefic in nature. The #2 black represents sickness. In my personal experience I have seen the #2 black star cause unnecessary delays, obstacles and abrupt change of plans. In the west the #2 black star could cause fire related accidents especially during September/October.

The #2 black star is yin earth in nature and the west (dui) palace is yin metal in nature. According to wu xing (five elements) theory the #2 black star nurtures the dui palace. Therefore, it will not show its extreme malefic nature however, during certain months you will have to take precautionary measures.

The #2 black star represents elderly women. The west sector represents younger woman. This could mean a conflict or dispute amongst women of the household. If you use the west area often, then you should double check your plans and be careful while making financial investments. If your house's/ office electrical mains are located in this area then check your equipment properly to prevent fire hazards.

Since the #2 black star represents sicknesses expecting mothers, babies and elderly people should avoid this area.

Remedy
Keeps the area quiet and avoid any form of renovation, construction or earth digging work in this area. Appropriate date selection will be required to do construction/repairs/renovations in this area.

You could place a metal wu lou (calabash) in this area. Another way to negate the #2 black stars negative attributes is to place salt water cure.

Salt water cure - In a medium sized glass or ceramic bowl fill half salt and top it up with water. Change the mixture whenever dry or dirty.

SAN SHA
East
This year the east is afflicted by san sha (also known as "Three killings" or saam set). The east is not a good area in 2009, appropriate date selection should be done before repair, renovation, ground breaking or construction works are done.

If your houses back door is located in this area you need to be careful of pilfering, robbery and armed assaults. In the modern world "being robbed" could be translated as loss of finances, somebody stealing your ideas, losing projects to competitors or losing/somebody stealing your work.

TAI SUI - Grand duke of Jupiter
Northeast
Tai sui changes its position every year and this year it occupies the northeast sector (15 - 45 degrees). Houses facing especially with doors located in and facing northeast will face the most problems. With tai sui located in your front door, you will find it difficult to progress. In offices it creates unnecessary delays, disruption of plans, unexpected legal hassles, robberies, anxiety, people turning against you and loss of money.

In one of the ancient texts it is written that whichever area tai sui is located one should not do any earth digging work. For safety reasons I include repairs, construction, digging of earth and too much noise. If disturbed tai sui can cause a lot of problems that ranges from bankruptcy, health issues, legal hassles, fights, disruption of work, accidents and the list is endless. Personally I have seen tai sui create havoc in the form of legal hassles, loss of money, disruption of work and robbery.

TSUI PO - year breaker
Southwest
Tsui Po is always located opposite to that of Tai sui. This year tsui po is located in southwest (195 - 225degrees). Tsui Po is also known as the year breaker. It is similar to tai sui and you should avoid doing any digging work in this area, for safety reasons I include repairs, renovation and too much noise.

Tsui Po disturbed creates all kinds of problems related to health, robberies, legal hassles, loss of wealth and the list continues.

Members of houses that face (15 - 45 degrees) northeast and have their back to southwest (195 - 225 degrees) need to exercise caution in all their decisions, it is best not to make any drastic changes in life, you should lay low and generally take it slow this year.

Note
People born in the same year as tai sui (Ji Chou - Earth Ox) or tsui po (Gui Wei - Water Goat), should be careful especially if you live in a northeast (15 - 45 degrees) facing house.

Next month on 'Inauspicious days in 2009'

Why Learn History of Feng Shui - Part II

I have seen current practitioners having the nonchalance to cite methods in Feng Shui classics compiled by renowned Feng Shui Masters like Jiang Da Hong & Yang Yun Song's methods as if these were universal truths that are applicable for all time and social context. For example, they say that these greats did not mention in their books that tailor their Feng Shui method according to the beneficiary's destiny so they believed that Astrology is not needed to carry out Feng Shui. If the likes of Jiang and Yang omitted to mention it, does it mean that they are against it or such a practice is useless? The likely reason is that the context of houses and technology during their time could have rendered it immaterial or unachievable to do so. In any case, unless one is speaking from the capacity of someone having learnt directly from these Feng Shui greats over a few years, they cannot assume to have fully understood the thought processes and approaches of these greats.

During Zhang and Yang's time, there were hardly high-rise apartments with subjective faade that makes for determining the apartment facing and consequently most Feng Shui formula highly subjective. It can also be said during their time, people that can afford paying for Feng Shui do not live in small apartments unlike now whereby the closer inhabitation means Feng Shui tuning takes on a new level of complexity which therefore warrants a fresh perspective into occupant's destiny.

Afterall, it was said that Jiang lead a very tough life and remained very poor even after practicing Feng Shui. So is he poor by choice or would he have become richer had he incorporated astrological consideration into his Feng Shui methods for himself? Although we will never know the answer to this question, still it shows that Feng Shui cannot improve beyond the borders demarcated by destiny.

It is interesting to note that the principles of Xuan Kong method begins with the Qing Nang Jing given to Zhang Liang by Huang Shi Gong during the reign of Qin Shi Huang (259 BC - 210 BC). The technique of the Xuan Kong Flying stars is well explained in the classics Xuan Kong Mi Zhi, Xuan Ji Fu, Fei Xing Fu all published in the Song Dynasty (960-1279). It can be surmised then that Jiang had adapted some of Zhang's works in his classics on Xuan Kong Fei Xing Feng Shui. The great Zhang Liang was greatly revered for his immense practical contributions and success towards kingdom building. It was also a known fact that Zhang practices Qi Men Dun Jia and others on top of Feng Shui. Jiang may be widely respected for his work in the practice of Feng Shui but that's not a justification to deride others like Zhang who blends in multiple practices and achieves resounding success.

In modern society, Feng Shui clients look to their consultants for one-stop consultation on many of their problems some of which may be really beyond Feng Shui. Hence, a Feng Shui consultant that also practices other skills like Astrology, Chinese Medicine and even Psychology can provide more comprehensive and synergistic services. Imagine a Feng Shui client had to visit a Feng Shui practitioner, an Astrologer, a doctor and a career advisor for his host of problems and each of them gave advices that contradict each other?

Another reason practitioners need to move along with times is that that technological advancements have rendered what could have been a best practice in those times to become cavalier now. For example, it would have been ludicrous for Feng Shui Masters during those times to perform Feng Shui audit without the aid of a Feng Shui compass, otherwise known as the Luo Pan. Even in current society, it may be frowned upon by ignoramuses that such a practice lacks professionalism. In actual fact, with the advent of Google Earth, it is no longer absolutely critical for a practitioner to bring the Luo Pan with him on an audit. In fact, it is a preferred option to measure directions as compared to the Luo Pan because it is unbiased and not affected by the magnetic fields in and within the vicinity of the house. Remember modern houses are built very differently now, with concealed cables running within and close to the house and their magnetism may skew the compass reading on the Luo Pan.

So having illustrated the need for Feng Shui practitioner to move along with times and society, am I sounding the death knell on reading up the historical developments of Feng Shui? Far from it! History is a good starting point for us to learn the past so that we can more effectively improve the future. Unfortunately, some people are curtailed by history because they use historical cases as benchmark of best practices and did not consider the change in context from these historical cases to modern ones. The Chinese saying that "Water can transport the boat and yet capsize it" sums it all. It is up to one whether to use historical cases as assistance or impedance.

Feng Shui For Troubled Times

Authentic Feng Shui balances both visible and invisible energies. This is a critical difference from hobbyist or "do it yourself" Feng Shui that concentrates on changing what is visible about your environment - the arrangement of furniture, for example. In contrast, a professional practitioner of authentic Feng Shui also manages the powerful unseen energies in an environment and this is how it is possible to bring about almost miraculous results.

Still, with the economy pumping so much uncertainty and anxiety into the environment, it's important to do all you can to create a supportive and protective environment. If you can't immediately tap the expertise of a professional Feng Shui consultant, here are some common-sense ways to address - and improve - the visible energies in your home or office.

1. Create a clean and orderly environment. With all that's going on in the outside world, it's smart to make your interior world as stress-free as possible, and that starts by removing all visible signs of clutter, unfinished tasks, disorder and disrepair. There's no need to put on white gloves and spend every spare moment cleaning. However, the cleaner and clearer your rooms, the better air currents - and energy - will flow. As a result, you will feel calmer, safer and more productive. The reason is that everything, from a piece of paper to a dirty pot in the sink, has an energetic vibration. When there are too many objects in a room, there is simply too much vibration. This makes it difficult for you to concentrate and can leave you feeling anxious, pressured and cranky.

2. Lighten your rooms - and your mood. With so much bad news coming at you from every direction, it's easy to feel down and depressed. Did you know that spending too much time in dark rooms can actually contribute to depression, aching bones and other ailments? Let the sunshine in! Sunlight actually stimulates the optic nerve and tells the brain whether to produce serotonin (the wake-up, feel-good hormone) or melatonin (the time-to-sleep hormone). Sunlight is also a natural disinfectant that warms, brightens, and kills mold, mildew and germs. Light is a yang (vibrant) energy and in these tough times you want to bring in all the light you can to tip the balance away from living in an overly yin environment. Add a skylight if you can! If not, pull back the blinds, clean your windows, and turn up the lights. Full-spectrum light bulbs are wonderful since they reproduce the quality of natural sunlight and its positive effective on your body and mood.

3. Make peace with your dcor! Conflicting colors and patterns not only conflict with each other - they can put you in conflict with your environment. Their warring vibrations constantly jar your eye, making you feel anxious and irritable. Plus, constantly looking at conflicting colors and patterns will strain your eyes (creating fatigue and headaches) and, over time, put pressure on your liver. Headaches, anxiety and health issues are the last things you need: make it a priority to surround yourself with colors and patterns that are in harmony with one another - and with you.

4. An eyesore is an eyesore. Anything that you see in your environment that bothers you will eventually depress your immune system. Get rid of those eye sores: chipped dishes, torn clothing, frayed or stained furniture, etc. And if you have an "eye sore view" from your window, immediately hang sheer curtains to block the view while still filling your room with beneficial light.

5. De-clutter your mind. A cluttered home or business creates a disorganized mind. And a disorganized mind usually does not handle stress well, nor can you think clearly. Clutter literally clogs your home with energy that may cause depression and an out-of-control feeling. Not being able to find your things can subconsciously send the message that you're failing. Sometimes you allow clutter simply because you are just too exhausted to do anything about it. The irony is that it is often the clutter itself that is inciting this feeling of fatigue. Free yourself from clutter so things can begin to open up in your home - and in your life.

Remember, what's visible in your environment is always a manifestation of what's going on inside. The good news is that you can also use this principle in reverse! When you feel inner turbulence, use that anxious energy to transform your external environment: clean, clear away clutter, brighten, and beautify! You'll be amazed at the immediate changes you begin to experience in how your environment looks and in how you feel.

Are You Feng Shui Ready For The New Year 2009?

We begin a new year according to the Chinese Calendar on February 4th 2009! At Blue Avalon we love the start of the new year - a great opportunity to start fresh and make this year the best year of your life!

At the beginning of each new year we recommend that you ensure you take the following actions in order to ensure that you are ready to embrace the new energies that will surround you throughout the next 12 months! If you follow Feng Shui - please ensure you do the following:

Salt Water Cures - for those of you who use these - you must dispose of any salt water cures that are over 2 months old as they are now full of negative energy and in order to continue to benefit from these cures - they must be replaced each new year (don't worry if you can't do it the exact day - just ensure it is within a few days of the new year.

Take your old cure (water, salt, glass and all) and wrap and seal it in a plastic bag or plastic container and throw the whole thing out! Yes including the glass and coins! Then replace these with brand new salt water cures for the afflicted areas.

Crystals, wu lous, Buddhas, or any other symbolic items - as many of you already know by reading our full moon information - one of the easiest ways to re-energize these items are to leave them out under a full moon overnight (the next full moon is January 10th, 2009). In the morning you can put them back to where you originally had them. If you miss the full moon then sprinkle your items with some salt (rock salt is best) - place them in direct sunlight for 4-6 hours - then rinse them, dry them - and place them back where they belong.

Know where the Annual Afflictions are located - Each year the direction of the three afflictions change. It is important you know this, as the areas of the afflictions in general should not be disturbed. Therefore, no noisy renovations or yard work should be carried out in these areas. There are certain enhancements that can be carried out it these areas are important.

2009 Year of the Earth Ox - Through Flying Stars

In the year 2009 the star #9 known as the purple star flies into the centre of the annual chart. This can be good or bad depending on how we make use of this star.

This future prosperity star can bring luck and wealth and as it related to the period star (8) it is a very positive year for youthful leaders to move into the forefront. However as #9 interacts with the Gen trigram is also means a dry and hot year. More fire related disasters like earthquakes, forest fires, and man made fire implications. Although economies will continue to struggle it will not be as bad as a depression. Small businesses and sound business decisions will make some continue to thrive through it all. The Ox a slow and hard worker will take over and slowly things will see improvement by third quarter.

The year of the ox will be a challenging year. Career, income and money prospects in general are average so hard work is warranted.

Specifically; Fire Businesses (electrical, cosmetics, computers) will continue to grow. Earth Businesses-(farming, construction, real estate), will do better by the end of this year. Fire and Earth bode well to see progress in these areas. Water businesses (hotels, shipping and tourism) should be conservative in growth or investment, as should wood businesses (furniture, textiles).

The year of the ox also brings in new directions for the annual afflictions. So you must also be very aware of the afflictions and understand how they change your homes directional sector for the year. Please ensure you follow the advice under each of the afflictions for the year, so that the negative effects of these can be minimized.

Once you have a full understanding of how the year maps then you can boost your prospects even further by reviewing the monthly stars each and every month! Don't be afraid it 's not that hard. In fact we have it all mapped out for you-just follow the guidelines it will take you very little time to do-and the time you invest will be well worth it!

Feng Shui Flying Stars - January 2009

What to look out for this month

January 6th - February 3rd, 2009

The energies of the directions will change and therefore we need to prepare and know what to expect!

This is a general overview. The Stars react differently based on the sitting and facing of your home so you should be aware of these directions.

For January 2009:

Southeast:

The number 5 star (a negative star) flies into the southeast bringing bad luck and illness. If you are residing in this sector -be careful with all decisions this month. And place some metal in this sector for the month.

South:

The 5 - 1 combination is one of water and earth which is not ideal - be careful if you are playing sports or in general guard against accidents. A medicine buddha or symbols of prosperity and victory will help here.

Southwest:

The 7-3 combination again is a difficult one and can cause concerns with arguments and fights so be careful with your words and actions if you reside in this sector. If this is your bedroom - add some blue (a blue rhinoceros is always auspicious) and focus on symbols of friendship and peace.

East:

A great combination for prosperity and success. If your office is located in this sector it will be a great month for business as your prospects increase! Great for students as well, a water feature and a dragon symbol will help boost this great energy this month.

Centre:

The 6 star brings good luck with it and this energy permeates throughout the house. Keep this energy alive with yang (lots of activity here) and lights!

West:

8 brings with it prosperity to those who reside here! A water feature would work well here, although keep children out of this area as this strong energy may cause them minor illness.

Northeast:

A great place to study for exams or to write your novel! Creativity is featured here this month! Also great for romance and family - Mandarin ducks, family portraits, mentor symbols and crystal points work well here.

North:

The 2 star is know for illness so be cautious (in particular men of the family) if you reside here. A wu lu beside your bedside (or other metal rounded sculpture) will help you keep healthy. However there is also career prospects here -- so if you reside here, make sure your money frog is in place or any symbols of wealth and prosperity.

Northwest:

The 7 violent star combined with the 2 star is not good news. Be careful with burglary here - make sure you alarm system is up to date and doors and windows locked if this is your front door. Keep protection symbols in this area this month.

Remember these are only general guidelines and it is best to do a full audit of your home in order to benefit the most from the changing energies of the stars!

Can Feng Shui Help My Karma?

Feng Shui is about the balance, harmony and attracting specific energies to create positive results. This method of attracting specific energies has been around for what is believed to go as far back as 3500 years. The Chinese believe that first comes destiny, secondly luck, then Feng Shui. So, if first comes destiny then we would be wise to use Feng Shui to help change our luck. When we make changes in our lives, it also changes the Karma that follows.

Karma, can be linked through our family generations, our past lives and how we lived this life in our earlier years. How we change our karma is directly linked to how we live or change our lives now, how open we are to love and how we intentionally create goodness within our lives. The goodness we put out is the goodness we attract through intentional change within us, as well as within our environment.

Heart felt and meaningful intention to bring on positive results that is not selfish or harmful to others, brings on good Karma, thus changing the negativity that has been created in our past. It is not something that can be changed over night, but over a period of time. Changes need time to be lived, to be committed to, to be felt and to be believed by the person wishing to make the changes. Once we change our lives for the better, our fate or Karma also changes for the better.

The longer we strive for goodness, kindness and balance, the more that will come back to us through the cosmic pull of our intention and balance in our lives and environment.

For example, if it is romantic love we wish to attract, then we need to open our hearts to love.

In the southwest sector of our environment, Feng Shui teaches us to work on this sector of our home to attract this energy. Also, the southwest sector of ones bedroom would also be suggested. Along with that, we include items in those sectors that are suggestive or symbolic of true romantic love between two people, pairs of decorative and symbolic items along with hints of red for passion.

To receive love, one needs to give love. We also need to love and accept ourselves before we can expect someone else to love us. We need to consciously live our lives with love. Make the choice to look for opportunities where you can begin to change your karma with simple acts of kindness, stay committed to change and watch the karmic effect this will have on your life!

You will be amazed at the goodness that will begin to follow you.

"Karma is a wonderful teacher when we have the courage to look close enough to learn the lesson."

Feng Shui - How to Have Healthy Lighting in Your Home

Proper lighting is one of the Feng Shui cures used for enhancing the chi energy in a space. Light uplifts oppressive energy from low ceilings, transforms the energy in a dark space, elevates the energy in a room, and activates stagnant energy.

Most people spend 90% of their time indoors and, most likely, with poor incandescent or fluorescent lighting. It's great to have natural light shining in, but you need to be aware that windows block some of the wavelengths present in sunshine from reaching your retina and nourishing your brain and body.

Having insufficient lighting in your home is considered bad Feng Shui, and your health and well-being will be impacted. There's compelling research that poor lighting can create depression. This problem grows as the winter months bring shorter and shorter days. Sunlight Starvation affects millions of people and causes the feeling of "Winter Blues." And in more severe cases people develop S.A.D. or "Seasonal Affective Disorder."

There is a solution. Make sure every room in your home is properly lit. Also, change all your bulbs to full spectrum. These powerful light bulbs produce clear, brilliant white light that simulates the exact color of sunlight at noon. There's an overwhelming amount of research showing its positive impact on health, human behavior, learning and longer life. Changing the light bulbs in your home is one of the simplest things you can do to improve your health.

Using full spectrum lighting will:

  • Enhance your mental awareness, concentration and productivity
  • Improve your mood
  • Help with your visual clarity and color perception
  • Improve your sleep
  • Boost your immune system
  • Give you more energy
  • Reduce eye strain and fatigue

Feng Shui As a Way of Life

Most people think of feng shui as a decorating term, and in many ways, that's what it is. Feng shui can be much more than that, however; it can actually become a powerful influence on who you are and how you live your life.

If you're familiar with feng shui, you already know the key to its success: energy. Feng shui is all about manipulating the energy, or chi, around you to redirect positive influences in your life.

When you decide to adopt feng shui as a way of life, though, you'll start finding ways to incorporate those principles into your every day.

Step One: Become aware of the basic principles of feng shui.

The first step in any undertaking is education. By becoming aware of the basic principles of feng shui, you make it much more likely that you'll be able to adapt those principles in your everyday life!

Step Two: Create a space for restful chi.

You don't have to totally "feng shui" your home to start applying its principles in your life, but it is essential that you create a space that you find peaceful, enjoyable, and relaxing. This can be as simple as a corner of your living room centered around a comfy chair. Regardless, this needs to become your fueling center for sheng chi (positive energy).

From here you'll need to spend a few minutes of each day (ideally in the morning) "recharging" in your peaceful spot. You can recharge in any way that works for you: meditation, prayer, or just sitting quietly. The point is not to read, or watch television, or think about anything but becoming one with the peace you've created in this space.

Step Three: Carry that peace with you.

You may think, "It's one thing to feel peaceful snuggled in my armchair; it's another when my boss is screaming at me for the fifteenth time this week." But you might be surprised! Spending a few minutes cultivating peace within yourself will give you the inner strength you need to endure many hardships during your day.

Step Four: Deflect and avoid negative energy.

As you become aware of the powerful peaceful energy surrounding you, you'll probably experience an increase in y our awareness of other people's energy -- and, in accordance with feng shui, other places' energy. You'll immediately begin to recognize the people and places that bring about negative feelings and interrupt your inner peace. You have three options in that situation:

  • Avoid: If possible, give that person or place a wide berth. For example, if you have a friend who's been making your life miserable for years, maybe it's time to let that "friendship" go.
  • Deflect: When people send negative energy in your direction, it's often an expression of their own inner turmoil. Whenever possible, recognize that this negativity is part of their pain and is not directed at you. Always remember the Fox's question from C.S. Lewis' Till We Have Faces: "Would you like to be [her]? No? Then she is to be pitied."
  • Change: Try bringing your newfound peace into a space and watch it change. It's amazing what a friendly smile and "Good morning!" can achieve on even the grumpiest person.

And of course, if you're talking places, it's time to bring the full force of feng shui to shine.

Feng Shui Cures Negative Energy

The west has been learning about Feng Shui. Cures that come from utilizing this method of home decoration can be anything from calming to healthy. Probably a more accurate description would be a method home arrangement. This is because the placement of objects is essential to feng shui. Feng shui was developed by Chinese culture and has been used by a number of other cultures. The reason is because the many benefits of using this practice were plain to see. Not only that but homes decorated according to these principles are very attractive. Once people understood that a feng shui environment was specifically to allow the flow of positive energy into the home it was very much in demand.

Every shape, color and object that is placed in a home has consequences. It is the people living in the home who either benefit or lose out. It has even been discovered that feng shui cures health problems. This is because your surroundings affect your state of mind. It is well known that your state of mind affects your emotional and physical well being. The layout of feng shui in the home sets the foundation for an atmosphere that is conducive to a positive outlook. Feeling positive is the basis of good health. It is believed that having a home that is untidy and chaotic could be the reason why certain individuals battle with excess body fat.

The immediate benefit of this practice is a clean, tidy and orderly environment. This will entail having to get rid of excessive material objects. This is especially so if you have possessions that you don't need or even want. This break with unnecessary materialism is very much in keeping with Chinese philosophy and could be considered as the starting point of feeling better. Feng shui cures a multitude of everyday problems resulting from clutter.

Get Started With a Feng Shui Guide

If you start anything new, you do need some assistance and this also goes for feng shui. Guide material is available. You can get ebooks on the subject like 'Feng Shui Secrets Revealed'. There are many good reasons to convert your home using feng shui principles. Feng shui is also known as a method to attract good luck. But it's not about superstition. It is a holistic approach to life. Your home will be arranged in such a way that there is a flow positive flow throughout. Your guide will also explain and teach you about the importance of color. Color affects your mood. So you must learn to choose colors wisely. This means you have to decide how you want your colors to impact on you and your family.

If you want all these principles introduced into your home then you do need a feng shui guide. This is a method of house dcor that does require guidance. This is because there are very definite principles involved. You can't arrange your possessions as you like. You have got to stick to the principles that will be in the guide. Having a set of instructions will help you to set up your home more quickly than you expect. The sooner you get your home sorted out the sooner you can start enjoying it. A huge bonus of feng shui is getting rid of clutter. Most people are surprised at just how may possessions they can do without.

A feng shui guide will teach you how to enjoy what you have. Every object in your home will have a purpose. There will be no unused objects stuffed under beds, behind doors and thrown into corners. Fraudulent Feng Shui

As a predictive art and metaphysical science, Feng Shui has been around for thousands of years. But to keep Feng Shui out of "just anybody's hands", the ancient Masters coded their references. In addition, as these references began to be translated, the translation was not always pure and was often influenced by the superstitions of the culture rather than by the science of actual Feng Shui. Today, popular western authors have done even more damage by inventing a whole truck load of New Age interpretations.

Many times, after consulting with another Feng Shui practitioner, clients will call me because they wonder why they haven't seen results - or worse, they're seeing new problems. Sometimes, I'm stunned at some of the crazy recommendations they received. One client recently told me she was told to put sealed water bottles in the center of her home and in her closets as a cure. Now, for water to work, it must be open to the elements. These bottles were sealed! No wonder the client didn't see any improvements! When she tried to reach the previous Feng Shui consultant with her concerns, her voicemails went unanswered.

Always question why you are asked to implement a particular recommendation. If the answer doesn't make sense to you, then don't do it!

Now, from the phone calls I recently received, I want to share these five blatant examples of Feng Shui Fraud:

1. Images of fish or real fish bring prosperity. FALSE. The fish is only a symbol of prosperity. It is the water in which they swim that actually helps to attract wealth. This is such a common myth that some fish have been known to sell for thousands of dollars because they are associated with wealth. So, it's not the fish themselves that bring wealth, but the fact that they move the water. Moving water - placed in the right location - can in fact attract money luck. But the attraction occurs whether you use fish or a pump to circulate the water! By the same token, pictures of fish also do not bring about money luck.

2. Keep your toilet lid down or you will "flush" your wealth away. FALSE. This is not just false but also so stupid and one of the most annoying new age myths. In fact, some books even say you should wrap your drain pipes in red duct tape to keep wealth from being flushed away. Well honestly! Visit any mansion and you'll find plenty of bathrooms - and the rich stay rich without red duct tape. So, while there are plenty of good reasons (like germ control) to keep the toilet lid down, protecting your wealth isn't one of them!

3. Placing objects in pairs brings romance luck to a single woman. FALSE. I've been in plenty of homes where women are desperately seeking husbands even though everything -- and I mean everything - in the home is in pairs. When I ask why, I often hear that they read the idea in a Feng Shui book or got the advice from a New Age consultant. The fact is, placing pairs of things is nothing more than superstition. What brings romantic luck is activating the right energies in the right areas for your own specific energetic makeup.

4. Paint your front door black for career luck. FALSE. One New Age ezine recently recommended painting the front door black for career luck. The reason was that according to the Black Hat school of Feng Shui, the center front of your home is the career sector and belongs to the water element which is associated with the color black. This is a very, very dangerous simplification. In fact, because different people have different energetic patterns, assuming that the center front of your home is the "career" sector is incorrect about 99% of the time. Plus, the colors black and blue can be quite harmful if they are not used correctly in a home.

5. Hanging or placing crystals fills a room with positive energy. FALSE. Unlike authentic crystals, the commonly used glass crystals have little power to change the energetic composition of a room. The good news is that they probably won't cause harm, but they won't activate positive energies, either. So if you like them, hang them, but don't expect your luck to change!

The clever mass marketing of Feng Shui has created Feng Shui everything: candles, jewelry, fashion, fragrances .... While these may support the concept of balance and positive reinforcement, none of these items are actual remedies for the home. Authentic Classical Feng Shui is about controlling the actual energy patterns within the environment to improve any given situation and ultimately the quality of our life. Bottom line: if you want real changes, you need real Feng Shui.
