Feng shui (traditional Chinese: 風水; simplified Chinese: 风水; pinyin: fēng shuǐ; pronounced /ˈfəŋˌʃueɪ/ foong-shoy in Chinese Mandarin, "fheng-schway" in American English) is an ancient Chinese system of aesthetics believed to utilize the Laws of both heaven (astronomy) and Earth (geography) to help one improve life by receiving positive Qi. The original designation for the discipline is Kan Yu (traditional Chinese: 堪輿; simplified Chinese: 堪舆; pinyin: kānyú; literally: Tao of heaven and earth).

The words feng shui literally translate as "wind-water" in English. This is a cultural shorthand taken from the following passage of the Zhangshu (Book of Burial) by Guo Pu of the Jin Dynasty:

Qi rides the wind and scatters, but is retained when encountering water.

Traditional Feng Shui practice always requires an extremely accurate Chinese compass, or Luo Pan, in order to determine the directions in finding any auspicious sector in a desired location.

Bed Linen and Feng Shui For a Balanced Life

Traditionally, our bedrooms were a room for relaxation and recuperation, a place in which serenity and calmness would wash away the excitement of the day. Today's lifestyle means that we are getting less sleep than we ever used to, stress and anxiety are on the increase and as a result our health is deteriorating with avoidable high blood pressure and heart disease on the up. Feng Shui can be used to balance our bedrooms into an area in which stress is combated and the importance of sleep is realised. By adopting the rules of feng shui to choosing our bed linen it can become a physical and spiritual barrier against anxiety and introduce peace into our lives. By using the colour theories of feng shui in our bedroom, we can achieve spiritual balance, well being and good fortune.

Feng Shui was developed in China over 3000 years ago, the word feng meaning wind and Shui representing water. They were linked to a good harvest which in turn would bring prosperity and good fortune. This theory has been developed over time and adapted to our modern lifestyle as a way to gain spiritual and physical well being in our relationships, career and health.

This article will only discuss the basic theories of classical feng shui in terms of colour but if you follow the tips presented you could easily transform your bedroom into a serene and calming haven. One of the key concepts of feng shui is the Bagua, a hexagonal shape divided into sections and each representing a different aspect of your life, for example love, health and so on. Each section of the Bagua has a corresponding colour which balances these aspects by 'curing' any imbalance.

Through understanding which colours affect what aspect, you can design a bedroom tailor made to your requirements. Whether you need more calm in your life or desire wealth and prosperity, choosing the correct colours will set you on the path to achieving this. Colours are separated into Yin and Yang colours. Yin colours have healing and relaxation properties whilst Yang colours can inspire enthusiasm and passion. Mixing the two together in your bedroom will allow you to stay calm whilst avoiding dejection.

Yin colours include blue as it reflects love, healing and holds soothing properties. Its association with the sky and sea can also imply adventure and exploration. Purple also has healing qualities and can promote spiritual awareness whilst white portrays confidence and purity. Black is a Yin colour and it symbolises money and income. Combining black with metal features can be good for your career, whilst adding white might give you the confidence to go after a promotion or a pay rise. If you feel dejected and as though you need a spiritual lift, mixing blues with the Yang colour orange can induce creativity and a new life journey.

Orange can promote creativity and concentration, giving you back a sense of purpose and helping you become more organised. Yellow will bring out your cheerfulness and friendliness, making you a warmer more well rounded sociable person. The Yang colours are pro-active and can be combined with Yin colours in a bedroom so that at night the Yin colours relax you whilst waking up and focusing on the Yang colours will energise you for the day ahead. Dark purple bed linen juxtaposed with brown and wooden furniture is a good combination for those who can not easily motivate themselves. The purple bed linen would be like sleeping in a healing cocoon whilst the brown furniture would induce you to work hard and be productive.

By using the juxtaposing Yin and Yang colours in your bedroom you are guaranteed to have a relaxed night sleep and to wake up feeling energised and ready for the day.
